Cheap Joe's Art Stuff

Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff began in 1987 with a couple of shelves of paper, paints and brushes in the Boone Drug Store in downtown Boone, NC. Joe Miller (Cheap Joe) was a pharmacist there, who had begun watercolor painting and didn’t want to travel two hours to buy his art supplies.

Rembrandt Soft Pastels

While not as hard as carre pastels, and not as soft as some of the finishing pastels on the market, Rembrandts are known for their medium softness, their density and consistency. Often called “the workhorse” of the pastel category, this is specifically because of this density and medium touch. Soft enough to easily release color, but hard enough to draw a sharp line, keep an edge and build multiple layers, the versatility is nearly endless.

Cobra Solvent-Free Oil Colors

Cobra (named for the artist group CoBrA, an abbreviation of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, the cities from which the artists originated), is a true oil color, with pigment and drying oils (linseed, or for a few whites – safflower oil). Using a plant-based emulsifier, the paint accepts water instead of solvent as a means to thin and clean up. There is no water in the paint, it is an oil paint, not an acrylic and not a watercolor.
